Dogs and other animals have demonstrated psychic ability, called anpsi, a part of the paranormal realm. The sixth sense of dogs has been documented many times. They have sensed the imminent arrival of a loved one and when a loved one is about to die, telepathy. They have sensed natural and other disasters, precognition. They have found their loved ones when the humans have moved far from home to a place the dog had never been or found their way back home from long distances, psi-trailing. These are the subjects of Part I. Dogs as ghost seers and dogs as ghosts is Part II.
My parents had two dogs when my father died. One was a Scottish terrier, Kilts the Second. She was a very timid, yet intelligent dog. When she was seven, I taught her to speak and to obey the hand signals to sit and lie down. After my father died, she refused to go into his room. One day I talked to her gently and explained that he had died, but, there was nothing to fear by going in his room. Then, she finally followed me into his room. Did she understand what I said? At times, after Dad died, we would smell his pipe tobacco and an ointment he used for his knees. This is clairaroma, psychic smelling. I also smelled carnations, one of his favorite flowers, in my apartment two days after he died. There were no flowers in my place. When I have had to make difficult decisions, I would smell his tobacco once I made them. My mother, son, daughter-on-law and others smelled the pipe tobacco years later. When my mother smelled the ointment, Kilts reacted to an unseen presence. A parapsychologist took a dog, cat, rat and rattlesnake into a haunted room in Kentucky. The dog, when taken into the room, whimpered in fear, ran out of the room and refused to return. The well documented Morton case is about a haunting in Cheltenham, England. At least 17 people saw the ghost over the years. Henry Swinhoe was the first owner. His second wife was Imogen Hutchins who left him and died in 1878. He had died in 1876 and the house was leased. The first renter died six months after he moved in. The house was vacant for nearly four years until Captain Despard, his wife, two sons and three unmarried daughters moved in. Rosina Despard, later Morton, was the person who most frequently saw the ghost of a woman. She wrote an account of this for the Society for Psychical Research. The family dog was a terrier who behaved oddly at time, reacting to a presence. Once, the dog excitedly wagged his tail as if he were about to be petted, then he shrank back in fear.
