Investigation: A “Haunting” in Historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania


The room is colder than the other rooms in the house, but this could be due to the fact it is above a crawl space. Even in summer, the room is noticeably cooler.

A woman, Pat, had a metaphysical book store I used to frequent. I mentioned the happenings to her. She told me to cast the circle of White Light around the room and repeat that that which was not of the White Light could not enter. I tried this, but did not tell anyone what I was doing. The visual phenomena stopped, only to be replaced by a tactile one.

Mother could feel something jump on the bed and cup her foot. It would creep upwards to her head, but she would shake it off. My parents had a dog and Mother had the dog sleep with her. The dog did not react. There was an also auditory phenomenon, which could have been the wind. It was an eerie moaning sound.

Dad said that, sometimes, at night, his bed would vibrate, as if something was crawling around beneath it. I lived several blocks away and had the same experience. I talked to my doctor about this while trying to eliminate possible biological and physical causes. His eyes lit up like he was thinking about me being delusional and getting me help for this.

I was perplexed as to what caused the phenomena. I wrote a letter to Dr. Karlis Osis, then president of the ASPR, American Society for Psychical Research. The letter is dated December 26, 1986. I wrote about the phenomena and asked for his help.

He called on a Sunday and we discussed the phenomena. He said, the trail was cold because most of the phenomena had stopped, but if he would do another investigation in Bethlehem, he would investigate the bedroom. He informed me that he had done a previous investigation in Bethlehem. He had wanted to talk to Mother, so I gave him the number. Then, I decided it would be a good idea for me to tell Mother about the letter and conversation with Dr. Osis.

A month or so later, Dad was in the hospital and came home on a Wednesday. It was rare that I visited my parents during the week unless there was a holiday or birthday. I was not feeling well, but I wanted to see how Dad was feeling. After I talked to
