The current stage is Pretense. The Presence has been felt by all taking part in the exorcism. Father Theophilis has to provoke the demons into revealing themselves. Although Satan is called the father of lies, he can be forced to speak the truth, although he tries to get around the questions by evasion and lies.
The next stage is Breakpoint where the Pretense has collapsed and the Voice appears. Theophilis spoke to Anna in German, English and Latin. He felt he got the truth to all of his answers. The legion of devils was headed by Beelzebub. The exorcist asked the devil if he was Lucifer, the prince of devils. The demon responded by saying no, but he was one of the leaders. He admitted that he was never human, but was a fallen angel from the seraphic choir. Theophilis asked the demon if God would allow redemption. The reply was was the exorcist a competent theologian? The exorcist pressed on with more questions. How long had Beelzebub been torturing Anna? Reply: since she was 14. How dare he take possession? Her father cursed her. Who gave the demon permission to possess the girl? Satan. At one point, following a prayer, a new voice identified itself as Jacob, Anna's father. The exorcist detected that this voice belonged to an entity that had been human. Jacob had led a perverse and cruel life. He had tried to force Anna into committing incest, but she refused to comply. He had cursed her and wished demonic possession upon her and try to force her to commit every possible carnal sin. It is not clear whether the father's desired incest was reality or fantasy. Had it happened, it could have been repressed. Anna swore she was a virgin. She was hostile toward Mina, the aunt who was a witch and had cursed herbs the girl ate. Mina was also Jacob's mistress. Mina's voice appeared, high-pitched and shrill. She was in hell because of the adultery with Jacob. She also admitted to murdering four children. It was speculated that these were her own children. Jacob confessed he had ridiculed the priest who gave him Extreme Unction. Even in death, he still wanted his daughter tortured and did not wanted to give this up.
