Glamis Castle: Legend, Lore and Phenomena


Sounds of dice rattling and stomping and swearing are heard emanating from the tower. Beardie's ghost has been seen in other parts of the castle.

The vampire is allegedly a female servant who was caught sucking blood from a victim. The legend is that she was walled up in a hidden room in the castle where she sleeps the slumber of the undead until somebody finds her to awaken her. Then, she will be free in her undead existence.

There is the legend that a vampire monster has been born from time to time to the Strathmores and is kept alive in a secret locked room.

Another legend is that, when the Ogilvys were being pursued by the Lindsays, they asked for sanctuary at Glamis, but were starve to death in a secret room.

Janet Douglas, wife of James the sixth earl of Strathmore, haunts Glamis. James died after eating breakfast and she was suspected of poisoning him, but there was no proof. In 1537, she was accused of trying to poison King James V. She was convicted of this and witchcraft and was burned at the stake at Castle Hill in Edinburgh. She haunts the clock tower and is enveloped in a reddish glow. There is a White Lady seen flitting about and some believe it is Janet.

A madman's ghost is seen walking on the roof on stormy nights. The place where he is seen is named The Mad Earl's Walk. A tongueless woman runs across the grounds, tearing at her mouth. Jack the Runner is the name given to the ghost who races on the driveway, toward the castle. A ghost of a black boy sits by the door to the Queen Mother's sitting room. A sad-eyed woman grabs at an upper window as if trying to escape. There is a tall form dressed in a long cloak.

There are grey ladies who haunt the chapel. These are female ghosts that died in a violent manner for love or from loss of love. For the most part, these ghosts are dressed in grey, but they have been seen in brown, white or black clothing. According to ghost lore, they haunt a house because they want to be reunited with their love. These haunting are often accompanied by poltergeist phenomena.

There are poltergeist phenomena in the castle. A door supposedly opens by itself each night, no matter how well locked or barricaded. There
