The Amherst Poltergeist, Human Agent or Demonic Entity?free from Bob and, eventually, married. In 1888, Hubbell wrote a book, The Great Amherst Mystery. He believed that a ghost was responsible for the incidents. Years later, Hereward Carrington, a highly respected psychical researcher, visited Amherst to try to interview people who may have known about the psi. He was able to talk to people who had witnessed the paranormal incidents in the Teed home. Carrington reconstructed the case and concluded that, while Hubbell's book was sensational and had exaggerated at times, it was basically fairly accurate. There are two basics theories about what caused the psi. According to parapsychologist, D. Scott Rogo, Roman Catholic belief is that demons can manifest and torment people in two ways. The first is by infestation and obsession, also present in poltergeist activity. The former is when objects are affected, including furniture throwing, fires, rappings, objects being thrown, electrical and electronic devices being affected. The second is by demonic possession. This could also be a case of the entity agent poltergeist. Destructive poltergeists, like the one in this article are rare. There is also the human agent poltergeist. There is a psychological profile for this type. The individual has unpleasant emotions, usually hostility and anger are present, but these are repressed. PK, psychokinesis, is the ability of the mind to affect objects. Unconsciously, PK is unleashed because of the conflict and anxiety and, as a result, there is poltergeist activity. The treatment for the human agent is psychotherapy. As the emotions are released, the activity ceases. This type can also stop spontaneously. As for Esther, I believe that she was a human agent as was Eleanore Zugun because the psi only happened in their presence and was centered around them. For further information about poltergeists, the first article I wrote for Suite 101 is "Poltergeists, the Reality, Not the Movie." I find poltergeists one of the most fascinating aspects of the paranormal. When I first read about them at about age eleven or twelve, I was terrified. My covers were wrapped tightly around me. No ghostie was going to snatch them from me! As I studied and learned more about them, I lost my fear. Even when I was in my early twenties, I would not read about them if I was alone in the house. I would not read about them or other ghostly phenomena at night. Now, I can read about them any time and even when I am
