Open Letter to My Readers Offering Hope

I get many, many emails from people around the world. So many in fact, that I finally decided to put together an answer that might touch them in some way. Of course, I still personally answer everyone's questions, because everyone is an individual with individual questions. Here is the main answer to the central question that everyone has - "How do I control GAD/PAD???"

The key to overcoming and/or controling panic is education. The person who suffers with this disorder, MUST educate themselves about the disorder!

Because the knowledge gained will allow them to stop that monster (panic) in its tracks!! This is how I have done it. This is how everyone I know who has panic controls it. I can't promise that the panic will go away - I went 5 years panic free and don't know why it left or why it came back. I leave that to the therapists to figure out. All I want is control back - because when you have this disorder, you feel like you are not in control of your own body, your own mind, your own self - it is a horrible feeling.

One of the things that I do to stop the attacks in their tracks is to wear a rubberband on my wrist. I pop that band HARD at the first slight feeling of anxiety - trust me, the pain will divert your brain from the anxious feelings!! It works for some...

Read, read, read!! :)

Also, call up some therapists out of your phone book and ask them if they know of any support groups for panic disorder in your community. If there isn't one, start one! Call around to therapists and ask them to help you start one! I would venture a safe guess that there are plenty more people in your community who suffer as you do!!

Above all, don't despair! There is help available and there are people who are here for you!

Write me - talk to me - let me know how you are doing!

Peace, Karen
