I have a bottle of St. John's Wort in my medicine cabinet. I haven't tried it yet because I am one of those anxious people who don't like to use ANY meds - not even herbs. Weird, I know, but such is the nature of anxiety disorders.
I HAVE discussed with many people the benefits of the herb, however. And everyone that I have spoken with tells me what a wonderful help it has been to them. So, here are a few facts and a few links for you, so that you can make up your minds! St. John's Wort - Hypericum perforatum has an active ingredient called hypericin. Hypericin is a photosensitizing chemical, so one of the major drawbacks of taking this herb is a greatly increased sensitivity to the sun. Doctors in Germany have been routinely perscribing St. John's Wort for the treatment of depression for years and the United States is just beginning to stand up and take notice of the usefulness of this little herb. The optimum dosage recommended by doctors is "300 milligrams of hypericum extract containing 3 percent of active ingredient hypericin three times per day." Downside? Don't expect to see any results for several weeks. Side effects: Nothing much. Certainly not as bad as Prozac, Buspar, etc. - restlessness, gastrointestinal irritations, mild allergic reactions, sensitivity to sun If you don't have a drug/herb phobia (like me!), I recommend giving St. John's Wort a try. Check out the web sites that I have recommended! Don't forget - You are not alone!! God bless and keep you safe! Karen Go To Page: 1
