Weekend eBook Sales

Please excuse me for writing two articles in a row about eBooks, particularly two that so heavily discuss pricing and my views on the high cost of eBooks. However, since my last article about FictionWise, both FictionWise and Palm Digital Media have launched new discount programs for their customers and I wanted to bring them to your attention. I promise the next article will be totally unrelated to eBooks.

As many of you know, I find the pricing practices of many eBook sellers completely out of line with reality. I should not have to pay as much or more than a paper book for an eBook. The costs of making an eBook are less since there are no materials costs, no warehousing costs, no distribution costs, no retail rental costs, and no retail sales salaries to pay. Granted, eBooks sellers do still have internet expenses and salaries to pay, as well as other costs, but their cost of doing business are much less than a traditional retail store.

Peanut Press, now Palm Digital Media (PDM), doesn't get my business because of two main reasons: their prices and their security policy. I'm not going to rehash the security issue again (I just discussed it in the last article) nor am I going to turn this into a long rant about PDM. Suffice it to say that I am not a big customer.

Last weekend PDM initiated a new discount program - weekend coupons. They are offering up to 50% off on a handful of books each weekend. You must specifically chose to get Weekend Special emails even if you already get PDM mailings.

Last weekend they offered three books for sale, a science fiction story for $3.00, book one in an adventure series for $2.50, and a non-fiction title for $7.50. These are certainly better than their normal prices, particularly for the fiction titles, and worth considering if the books sound interesting to you and you can live with the security and their eBook reader (which I don't particularly like).

At the same time, FictionWise began their own weekend specials. They offer you up to 60% off on a few books specifically chosen to match your previous buying habits. Unlike the PDM program, this is not an outright discount but a rebate - once you purchase the books they place money back into your micropay account. You must also opt into the FictionWise weekend discount alerts if you want to get them.
