GetHighTech Offers Free How-To Repair Articles

GetHighTech has been selling Palm parts for over two years now, and is by far the most comprehensive outlet for buying Palm screens, memoryboards, OEM cases, battery doors, and other replacement parts. I strongly recommend them for all your repair needs, but only for devices out of warranty. If your Palm is still under warranty, please contact the device manufacturer - any attempts at home repair will void the warranty.

In the past, GetHighTech offered instruction pages with step-by-step instructions and a few key photographs for many of the more common repairs people needed including screen removal and replacement instructions for the Pilot series, PalmPilot series, Palm III series, TRGPro, Symbol SPT-1500, Visors, Palm IIIc, Palm VII series, m10x series, and Palm V series devices. Although the instructions offered are quite clear and useful, many people are afraid to open their devices and attempt to fix them.

To help you feel more comfortable with repairing your own device, GetHighTech recently introduced several movies showing specific repairs from start to finish. The videos are all fairly small AVI files (compatible with both QuickTime and Windows Media Player) packaged in zip files ranging from 800K - 3.3MB. Even people using dialup can use these videos. If you have a broken screen but aren't quite comfortable enough with just the written instructions and handful of pictures on the repair instruction pages, these videos can show you the entire repair process from start to finish.

The available videos are:

  • Palm III, IIIe, IIIx & IIIxe Screen Removal and Take Apart
  • Palm III, IIIe, IIIx & IIIxe Digitizer (GlassTop) Repair
  • Visor, Visor Deluxe, Visor Platinum, Visor Pro, Visor Neo Screen Removal and Take Apart
  • Visor, Visor Deluxe, Visor Platinum, Visor Pro, Visor Neo Digitizer (GlassTop) Repair
  • Palm 1000, 5000, Personal & Professional Take Apart
  • Palm 1000, 5000, Personal & Professional Memory Removal & Install Video

I downloaded the first video, the Palm III screen removal, since that's one of the repairs I've personally done. The video quickly and efficiently shows you how to take apart the device. It shows you where the screws are, where the plastic tabs that hold the casing together are, and where the ribbon cable you need to unhook is located. It also shows you how to remove the motherboard, plastics, and screen from the casing and then how the screen pops out from the frame.

The video moves through these steps quickly. I'd recommend using the video in conjunction with the relevant repair direction page. One thing to note is that some older devices will have shielding as shown in this picture (courtesy of GetHighTech).
