Showcase of Stylii: ConceptKitchen PenCap Stylus

Those of you who've been reading my articles for a long time may know that in general I am not generally fond of ConceptKitchen (now Fellowes) products. I find WriteRight screen protectors add glare to my screen, leave a residue, and have a ridged texture that makes it difficult to write. I found it almost impossible to get devices in and out of the Bumper case and the process of getting the device in often turns the contrast wheel on devices that have them. So I was more than a little nervous about trying the ConceptKitchen PenCap stylus. I liked the Stinger stylus a lot and thought this was a similar product I might like more than I originally expected. I was right.

The PenCap stylus is actually quite nice. It is about an inch and a half long, made from hard white plastic, and fits over the top of most standard pens and pencils. The end comes to a point about the size of a standard III stylus tip. About half an inch overlays the pen body, extending out on one side to form a clip that will slide over notebooks or shirt pockets.

The PenCap stylus is definitely small and easy to carry. Like the Stinger it won't fit in the stylus silo but it is small enough to easily fit in a pocket, purse, or even a change purse. All of this is moot if you can't write with it.

I tried the stylus with three different pens of different thicknesses and a standard pencil. I found it worked well on all of the pens and not as well on the pencil. I guess the wood and octagonal shape was a factor because one of the pens I tried was almost the same size as the pen.

At first I tried to hold the stylus like I would a pen. That didn't work at all. When I gripped it closer to the bottom and moved it more perpendicular to the screen my comfort level and my grafitti recognition both improved. In this position I could write fairly fast and very accurately.

If you carry pens with you and want a spare stylus, or if you don't like the standard stylus and want something small and easy to carry around, I recommend trying the ConceptKitchen PenCap stylus. They sell in four packs for $9.95 from StylusCentral and other retailers.
