Scramble It

Last week I reviewed Wordlet, a Boggle-like game from Oopdreams Software. This week I thought I'd take a look at their other word game, Scramblet.

Scramblet is similar to Wordlet in that in both games you are trying to compose words from a random group of supplied letters. But unlike Wordlet you don't need to use consecutive letters to form the words. Rather, in Scramblet you are given a row of seven letters to use in any order. Each letter can be used once and only once per word. Like Wordlet you can use multiple tenses of the same word but foreign words and proper nouns are not allowed.

Scramblet supports two modes of gameplay: gambler and solitaire. In both you are given a set amount of time to find at least a certain number of words (it varies by round). In gambler mode you are challenged to find a percentage of the available words. If you find at least that many you win a pre-determined amount of money. If you don't find enough words you lose that same amount. In solitaire mode, you are granted money for each word you find and told how many words you need to find to break even. In both modes you are given the opportunity to decline to play a specific round for a small monetary penalty.

Scramblet uses the same word database as Wordlet. If you play both games this saves you a considerable amount of space. Also, it means corrections, additions, and deletions you make to the database are reflected in both games.

Scramblet is a fun word game similar to the word scrambles found in the Dell puzzle magazines. Dell is shareware and costs $15.
