Medical Resources for the PalmMore and more doctors, nurses and other medical professionals are starting to use Palms in their practices. There are several websites devoted to using Palms in medicine, and many products devoted to medical professionals. This article will provide an overview of some of these sites. Before I get started, just a quick note about which Palm medical professionals should buy. Many of the resources for doctors are available as Springboard modules compatible only with Handspring Palm OS units. If you are interested in a Palm version of the PDR or the Washington Manual or the Handbook of Adverse Drug Reactions or a few others you will need a Handspring unit. See my previous article "Which Palm Should I Buy?" for more information on this topic. One of the best resources for medical professionals with Palms is Handheldmed. Handheldmed publishes a large collection of databases and books for the Palm including patient tracking software and the Merck Manual. It also provides forums for discussing the use of Palms in medicine. Handheldmed concentrated on providing superior products, and although there is some excellent information, the products are definitely the focus of the site. PDAMD is another site devoted to the melding of handhelds and medicine. Rather than concentrating mainly on Palm applications and databases, PDAMD provides reviews of various products and links to news stories pertaining to health and medicine on the Palm. They also offer several columns including one geared toward medical students and forums for specific areas of Palm medical usage. They also have a nice software archive, but the thrust of the site is more informational than product-driven. CollectiveMed.com is another site that concentrates mainly on software. It's archive is very well organized by type of medical application and is very easy to use. It also has some nice general PDA information including help in deciding which PDA is right for you. Another excellent site is peripheralbrain. In addition to some excellent general Palm information, this site has links to medical software, databases, and books. It's best feature, however, is its comprehensive list of medical Palm links. If you can't find what you need at one of the sites above, try the sites listed on peripheralbrain. If you are a medical professional with a Palm, these sites should help you use your Palm more efficiently in your practice. If you use a different site, please tell us about it in the discussion attached to this article.
