The Great Case Roundup: CDProjects Flip Case

At the same user group meeting that I won the Deluxe Leather Case, my friend Marci won a PilotIsland Communicator case. It was the first case I saw with a fliptop - it really did look like an old-style Star Trek communicator. I liked the case quite a lot and contemplated buying myself one. Other flip cases started appearing in the marketplace and still I resisted. Even though they seemed ultra protective and let me use the Palm in the case, they were big and bulky. Most of them also kept the hotsync port open to allow for in-case syncing, something I do not like.

Recently, Marci and I were wandering through our local Microcenter when I found a crate of Palm cases on sale for $3.95. I grabbed one and it was a flip case. Finally it was time to buy.

The CDProjects flip case is interesting in that the piece that flips over the unit is attatched at the bottom of the case. A small flap with velcro folds over the top of the unit and attaches to the flip piece. It seemed like this design could get in the way of using the unit in the case but it didn't. The flip piece rotates all the way around to the back of the case, and the same velcro flap that keeps it closed will also keep it open behind the unit.

The Palm itself fits into a pocket with an open front. Two elastic straps hold the unit in place - one at the very top and one at the bottom of the grafitti area/top of the bottom casing. The bottom strap can get in the way of using the Menu and Find silkscreen buttons on some units and would probably interfere with keyboard layovers like SilkyBoard and FitalyStamp. However, I had no such problems. The left side of the pocket area has a slot cut out for the contrast wheel. I found that it didn't quite line up correctly with my PalmPilot Professional, but it was close enough that I could adjust the wheel with the unit in the case. The right side has a loop for holding a spare stylus. There is a little mini-pocket for the tip of the stylus so it doesn't fall out. Unfortunately, I found that this pocket is too small and it is very hard to get the tip in. I lost my favorite stylus after a few days of using this case.
