Match 15

Yes, I am giving in to temptation again and writing about a card game. I know you are all dying from shock right about now.

Match 15 by Evan Sherbrooke is a variation of a popular solitaire game called Fifteens. The basic gameplay is quite simple. The tens are removed from the deck. Cards are laid face up in a 4x4 grid. The rest of the deck sits in a draw pile. Your goal is to remove all of the cards from the grid. Cards can be removed two ways: Selecting multiple cards of the same suit that total 15 or selecting all three face cards in a specific suit. When the selected cards are removed, cards from the draw pile fill the empty slots. The game ends when no more cards can be removed. If you can remove all of the cards, you win.

These card removal rules are a bit of a departure from Fifteens where instead of removing the J-Q-K of the same suit, you remove all four of a specific face card as one move. You also retain the tens in Fifteens and treat them as a face cards.

This game is quite difficult. Rather that just letting you win or lose the game, this implementation assigns points for removing cards. The more cards you remove at once, the more points you get. For removing a pair of cards, you get 10 points. For removing three at once you get 25 points. For removing four at once you get 60 points. For removing five at once you get 120 points. You also get a time bonus if you finish the game in under two minutes. But be careful, if you prematurely end a game while there are still available moves, you will receive a 50 point penalty.

Match 15 is a lot of fun, but it would be nice to also see how many games have been won, or an average score. I would also like to see an option that uses the standard Fifteens rules.

Match 15 is shareware and costs $5.
