Last year I wrote an article covering freeware hacks. It has been my single most popular article, so I decided to write a sequel. Here is an overview of six more freeware hacks:
Visual Bell Hack by Synergy Solutions is a simple hack that displays the word "PING!" in the lower left whenever a non-click system sound is played. This hack is particularly useful for people who turn off the sound on their unit, or like to keep their unit in a case that completely muffles the sound. Visual Bell Hack will run on any Palm OS device. NoClick by John Pane disables the system clicking sound without disabling other system sounds. NoClick will run on any Palm OS device. BackMute also by John Pane intercepts all system sounds exceot the clicking sound, mutes them, and inverts the backlight for the duration of the alarm. BackMute requires a device with a backlight (Palm Pilot Personal or newer). Paarentheses Hack by Fred Bayer Informatics helps you match parentheses in your text. Designed specifically for use with Scheme code in LispMe, Paretheses Hack also works in MemoPad. It flashes the starting parenthesis whenever you enter an end parenthesis. It also lets you find matching parentheses in existing code or memos. Parentheses hack works on any Palm OS device. SelectTime Hack by Unlimited lets you assign anytime to an event in the DateBook database. Although the default 5 minute increments still appear in the quick select time column, the up and down time arrows increment by one minute when SelectTime is enabled. SelectTime Hack works on any Palm running OS 2.04 or greater. Tilt Hack by Till Harbaum allows you to map the hardware buttons to specific unit movements if you have a digital accelerometer in your Palm. Once you map the motions to buttons, you can use these motions instead of the hardware buttons in most applications. Remember, all of these hacks are free, but require HackMaster which is shareware and costs $5. More information on HackMaster and how hacks work can be found in my article on extending the behavior of your Palm. Go To Page: 1
