Some of the games are a bit hard to play using the Palm hardware buttons for controls, but chosing the button assignments wisely helps. I found that assigning A to the datebook button, left to address button, up to the up button, down to the down button, right to the todo button, and B to the memo button works pretty well for most games. It provides a reasonable faxcimile of the quad-directional rocker on the Gameboy units.

There are also some potential legal issues with Liberty. As with all types of downloadable files, it is very easy to locate and use illegal gameboy roms. However, there are several archives of public domain Gameboy roms that can be freely used.

So, should you run out and get Liberty? Well, many people have been running Liberty without problems. Gambit Studios believes the really serious bugs have been found and fixed. The worst you should have to do is perform a soft reset if you load a bad rom. Of course, there are no guarantees. If you decide to go ahead, there are some precautions you should take:

1. Do a complete backup before installing Liberty
2. Try out each gameboy rom in the Palm emulator. Many of the crashes have been due to bad roms.
3. Report any problems you do have using the bug report form. Gambit Studios has been doing an exceptional job with technical support but they can't fix problems they don't know about.

Liberty is shareware and costs $16.95. There is also a demo version that will play Gameboy roms less than 32KB. Both versions come with a Windows-only rom conversion tool and C source code for the converter you can use on other platforms.
