Okay, I admit it. I like card games. What's not to like? A little skill, a little luck, and a Palm to play on makes me a happy camper. Once again I am drawing on the fabulous card games at Seahorse Software for my weekly article. I hope you'll all agree Montana is worth the attention.
In Montana Solitaire, also known as Station or Gaps, your goal is to place all of the cards from 2 to K in order in each suit. The play starts with a random deal of all 52 cards into 4 rows of 13 cards each. The aces are removed from play, leaving four empty slots. Slots can be filled by the next card in the suit of the card to the left of the slot. For example, if the nine of hearts is to the left of an empty slot, the ten of hearts can be moved into that slot, leaving a new empty slot in its former location. The first column of a row can be filled with any two. Slots to the right of kings cannot be filled and are marked by a black x. The round ends when no more cards can be played (i.e., all of the empty slots are to the right of kings). A game consists of three rounds by default, but can be set to one, two, or four rounds instead. After each round, the aces are added back into the deck and the cards are redealt. Only cards positioned in sequence starting from the two remain in place when the cards are redealt. Even if you have six cards in order, unless they start with the two they are collected and redealt. Again the aces are removed and play continues until the round is over. If you do not successfully position all 48 cards by the end of the final round, the game ends and one point is awarded for each card in its proper position starting from the two. Again, cards in order that are not connected to the two of their suit do not count. If you do successfully place all 48 cards, another round is dealt. By default, the number of redeals remaining is not reset, so if you have no redeals left at the time you successfully place the 48th card, your game ends after the next round. If you prefer, you can reset the number of redeals after winning a game. In either case, the points earned in these rounds are added to the 48 points previously earned for the total game score.
