Screwdriver Anyone?

Yes, I know the holiday season is upon us and many of us are contemplating turning to drink to eliminate some of that seasonal stress, but there are much more interesting ways to relax. So pull up a chair and grab a screwdriver - Pilot Screwdriver that is.

Pilot Screwdriver, found at http://pilot.screwdriver.net , is a stress-free way to convert HTML files to doc files. Just enter a URL and optionally a title, submit the request, and download and install the resulting PRC file. You can read news and magazine articles, books, reference materials, or any other html files on your Palm without saving the HTML files locally and using a local Doc converter.

Pilot Screwdriver creates fairly clean Doc files. One of its best features is its table support - it claims to make tables almost legible on the Palm, and I'd have to agree. The data does line up and it is easy to tell where the column breaks go.

Pilot Screwdriver also converts web images to ImageViewer files using the same simple process. It does not support greyscale, so black and white images work best for conversion.

Pilot Screwdriver provides a small graphic and corresponding code that you can place in any HTML file. Clicking on the image will automatically convert the page it resides on into Doc format. In addition, the site lists a URL you can bookmark and use to generate a Doc file on the fly. Just select that bookmark from any page and that page will be converted to Doc format.

Also, the site provides direct links to download several popular websites including slashdot.org, Reuter's news feeds, new stuff at Memoware, and the daily Dr. Fun comic.

Pilot Screwdriver is a free, easy way to pull reference material onto your Palm. From the list of Nobel Laureates to the list of NBA Most Valuable Players to Java API documentation, this service can create a personalized Palm reference library for you.

So relax, grab those needed reference files, but take some time for yourself too - scroll through some ezines or wander over to Project Gutenberg for poetry, novels, and plays. It's all there for the reading.
