Datebk3 Icon Editors

Last week I reviewed Datebk3, a popular DateBook and ToDo App replacement program. One of its unique features is the ability to attach icons to appointments to visually categorize them in several of the available views. Datebk3 comes with a wide variety of icons, but doesn't provide any way to customize them. The following three applications allow you to edit Datebk3 icons:

DBiced

DBiced by Inertron Software allows you to edit both Datebk3 icons and their names. When launched, DBiced reads the DATEBK3 memo to determine the current set of icons. This memo must exist and contain valid icon information to use DBiced.

The left third of the application screen contains a 4x13 grid of the 52 Datebk3 icons. The top two-thirds of the right side contains an 8x8 grid used to edit the selected icon. Each box of this grid represents a pixel and is approximately the size of an icon. The icon name is in an editable textbox immediately below the icon edit area. Tapping on a box toggles whether that pixel is filled or empty. Below the name a set of arrows allow you to shift the entire icon one pixel in the specified direction. Any rows or columns that scroll off the edge are automatically relocated to the other side of the icon. After an icon has been modified, a revert to saved button is also available.

DBiced lets you copy and paste icons if you just want to make minor changes from an existing icon. It also lets you invert all of the pixels.

DBiced is freeware.

DB3 Icon Editor

DB3 Icon Editor by GreyM Systems allows you to edit both Datebk3 icons and their names. When launched, it reads the DATEBK3 memo to determine the current set of icons. This memo must exist and contain valid icon information.

DB Icon Editor lists each icon by name. It does not let you view the icons collectively; you must select an individual icon first. The main screen lists 26 icon names at a time and lets you toggle between the first half of the icon names and the second half.

Once you've selected an icon, a window will popup asking if you want to change the name of the icon. If you say no, you will go to the icon editing screen after a short delay due to hexadecimal to binary conversion. If you say yes, you will go to the icon editing screen after you enter a new name. Once you are in the icon editing screen you cannot change the name of the icon.
