Datebk3

As I mentioned in a previous article, first and foremost the Palm is designed to be a personal organizer, replacing all of those address books and paper daytimers we used to lug around. With that in mind, I am reviewing Datebk3, a popular DateBook and ToDo App replacement. Future articles will examine other DateBook and ToDo replacements.

DateBk3 by Pimlico Software provides an alternate front end to the built-in appointment and to do databases. It provides six views of your data: daily, weekly timed, weekly untimed, monthly, yearly, and list.

The daily view lists uncompleted to do items due on the day in question at the top of the screen (uncompleted tasks are carried over from previous days). Each item has a box to check upon completion. By default, an item will no longer display once it has been marked. The rest of the screen shows a timed breakdown of the day and any scheduled appointments. The look and feel of this view is very similar to the day view of the DateBook application.

The weekly timed view is almost identical to the weekly view in the DateBook application. The weekly untimed view looks like a typical paper daytimer weekly view. It splits the screen into seven sections, one for each day of the week. To do items and appointments appear as line items in each section.

The monthly view is also very similar to the monthly view in the DateBook application. The yearly view shows a very high overview of the entire year. Basically, it can only show whether or not you had at least one appointment on a given day. It cannot provide any information on the appointments themselves. Tapping on any day in the yearly view shows the first line of the first appointment of the day.

The final view, list view, shows a running list of all to do items and appointments. Each item contains the day of the week, the date, the description, and a note icon if it contains a note. To do items also have a checkbox to mark them completed. Timed to do items are shown on their due date. Untimed and overdue to do items are shown under today's date.

Datebk3 provides a lot of functionality missing from the built-in applications. Aside from the additional views, it supports floating events that move from day to day until they are finished. By default all to do items exhibit this behavior. It also supports categories, and allows you to filter each view by category. Not only can you view all appointments in a single category, you can also pick and choose any group of categories to show together. Datebk3 also supports timezones, allowing you to shift alarms and appointment times to reflect your current location. Make an appointment for a 10 am EST phone call, and shift it automatically to 3 pm local time if you happen to be in London that day.
