Welcome to part five of my series on Palm freeware. This week we will investigate hacks.

Hacks are utilities and system extensions written using the HackMaster API. Some hacks add additional functionality or configurability to the Palm OS such as integrating more fonts or adjusting the available sounds. Other hacks add utilities like pop-up clocks or battery monitoring tools.

You must have HackMaster installed to use hacks. Athough HackMaster itself is shareware (and well worth the $5 asking price), there are a lot of freeware hacks.

Here is a sampling of some of the available freeware hacks:

MenuHack

MenuHack by Ed Keyes, automatically activates any available menus when you tap on the menu area at the top of the screen. This eliminates the need to hit the menu silkscreen button every time you want to access a menu.

MoreFont Hack

MoreFont Hack by Yamada Tatsushi provides the 0S2 large font to OS3 users. The "large normal" font becomes availble in any application that allows you to select fonts.

FontHack 123

FontHack 123 by Sergey Menshikov lets you assign new fonts (created using Pilot Font Editor for Windows or MakeFont68 for Macintosh) to the built-in font types on either an application-by-application basis or globally.

AfterBurner

AfterBurner by Jean-Paul Gavini allows you to adjust the clock speed of your Palm. You can slow it down to decrease battery usage or speed it up if your favorite game runs too slowly for your taste. Currently AfterBurner sets one clock speed for all applications but it may be configurable for each application in future versions.

InvertHack

InvertHack by Peter Strobel inverts pixel color when the backlight is on. This makes Palm IIIx/Palm V screens act like Palm III/PalmPilot screens and vice versa.

3AlarmHack

3AlarmHack by Roger Chaplin allows you to configure the sound used by alarms. You can choose which sound plays, how many times it should play, whether the backlight flashes, and how many times to repeat the alarm at a configurable interval. 3AlarmHack requires OS 3.x.

ChronoHack

ChronoHack by Montanna Pty Ltd pops up a clock and, optionally, the date and a battery reading whenever a user-defined set of keystrokes is used.

Char Hack

Char Hack by Montanna Pty Ltd pops up a box that lets you select a symbol to enter into your text. This provides an easy way to enter these characters with memorizing rarely-uused grafitti strokes. If you prefer, Char Hack will display French or German characters instead of symbols.
