Welcome to part two of my series spotlighting Palm freeware. This week I am showcasing 7 tile, board, and arcade games:
HMaki by Holger Klawitter is an implementation of the tile removal game known as Maki, Breakthru, or SameGame. Sets of contiguous tiles with the same pattern are removed until no more tiles can be removed from the board. HMaki offers four scoring modes: big tiles, small tiles, cleanup, and leave tiles. Big tiles awards high scores for removing a lot of tiles in a single move. In small tiles, you try for a low score by removing the smallest possible number of tiles in each move. In cleanup, the goal is simply to remove as many tiles as possible. Finally, leave tiles challenges you to have as many tiles as possible left on the board when you make your final move. HMaki also lets you play seeded games, choose from a 3x3 to 22x20 board size, and choose from 2 to 9 patterns. Kniffel by Christian Gengenbach is Yahtzee for the Palm. Kniffel supports from 1-4 players in either normal or tournament modes. In normal mode, players alternate after every roll in keeping with the traditional Yahtzee rules. In tournament mode, each player roles an entire round before control passes to the next player. Kniffel supports most of the traditional scoring rules including a 35 point bonus for scoring at least 63 points in the "number" section. Instead of calling 4-in-a-row and 5-in-a-row small and large straits, Kniffel calls them strait and flush respectively, which can be slightly disconcerting at first. Kniffel is definitely my favorite Palm implementation of Yahtzee. Note: Kniffel does not have a web page. Download it from PalmCentral. JTWOF by Jaeger Technologies is Wheel of Fortune for the PalmOS. It is very faithful to the television show complete with a bespectacled host and a blond assistant (sorry, no prizes). The wheel actually spins and includes favorites like "Lose Your Turn" and "Bankrupt." Each game consists of 4 rounds and each successive round adds a higher maximum dollar amount to the fray. There are extra puzzles and a different graphics pack available on the JTWOF website. Vexed by Spacetube HQ is another addictive tile matching game. The goal is to remove all of the tiles from the board. As soon as two or more tiles with the same pattern touch they are removed from the board. The game board is vertical, and the rules of gravity apply. Be careful - it is very easy to strand solo pieces that cannot be removed. Vexed ships with 59 levels, and provides easy level restart and jump to any level functionality. Go To Page: 1 2
