The Fish, Part I

The placoderms were very numerous throughout the Devonian Period. They lived in both marine and freshwater habitats. In fact, they were probably the first fish to venture from the ocean into freshwater habitats and were probably very efficient predators. They disappeared completely during the Carboniferous Period (345 to 280 million years ago), and their niche was taken over by the sharks and rays.

In my next article, I will discuss the chondrichthyan fish.
