A Visit to the Museum of Life and Science

Visitors can learn about insects in the Magic Wings Butterfly House and Bayer Crop Science Insectarium. The inhabitants include several species of stick insects, giant hissing cockroaches, crayfish (who belong to the same group as instects), and poison arrow frogs. In addition, there are carnivorous plants and prehistoric cycads. Visitors can walk through the tropical butterfly conservatory and view hundreds of exotic butterflies-be sure to pick up a butterfly identification card on your way in!

Visitors will want to visit the Museum of Life and Science on a nice day, in order to enjoy the many outdoors activities. The many hands-on exhibits and activities can easily entertain the family for an entire day, or visitors can select indoor and outdoor exhibits to see the museum in either a morning or afternoon, before childrens' attention spans wander and they become cranky.

Members of the Museum of Life and Science receive free admission to the museum and Magic Wings Butterfly House, a subscription to the museum's newsletter, invitation to members only events, a 10% discount at the museum stores, discounts on Community Classes for young children, a discount for Super Science birthday parties, discounts on Summer Science Camp, and use of the Science Education Resource Center Library. Museum members also receive reciprocal free admission to many other museums.

It is a great idea to become a member of your local natural history museum. Membership usually includes free or reduced admission to the museum and special events (often invitation to members-only events), as well as a discount at the museum gift shop. You will usually receive a calendar of upcoming events and often a monthly or quarterly publication of museum research. Some museum publications such as Natural History, published by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and Smithsonian, published by the Smithsonian Institution, are quite lush. Some museum memberships also offer reciprocal free admission to other museums. Membership is a great way to learn more about the natural world and to support your local museum.

Be sure to visit my web site for more links to natural history museums. If your local museum is not listed, please contact me with the URL, and I will add it!
