In the following chapters, Holtz looks at some of the paleontological evidence and discusses how this evidence might support each scenario. Were T. rex's eyes really too small to allow it to see well? Was the "smelling" part of T. rex's brain better adapted to finding carrion or live prey? Could T. rex catch prey with its short arms, and did it really need to use its arms for hunting? Were T. rex's teeth better adapted to slicing off meat or crushing bone? Could T. rex run fast enough to catch prey animals?
I felt that T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger? is well-written and provides a balanced look at the two scenarios for T. rex feeding. Holtz examines the adaptations that have been used to argue that T. rex was either a hunter or a scavenger, and demonstrates that these adaptations could be used to allow T. rex to be either a hunter or scavenger. Holtz summarizes by saying that T. rex probably hunted live prey, but would not refuse the free meal of some carrion that it found, just as modern lions will not turn down carrion. The illustrations and diagrams by Michael Skrepnick are lush and help the reader to understand the subjects that are discussed in both Raptor Pack and T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger? T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger also uses photographs of extant animals to demonstrate their hunting techniques. I recommend T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger? to young paleontologists who want to learn more about the debate that this dinosaur has sparked. Although I found Raptor Pack interesting, I am more hesitant to recommend it, partly because the writing is not as good quality as T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger?, but also because I found some of the conclusions that Bakker makes about the paleobiology of raptors to be questionable.
