Review: Chased by Dinosaurs

Recently, the Discovery Channel presented "Chased by Dinosaurs," a programme featuring the fantasy of all paleontologists: to travel back in time to the Mesozoic Era (230 to 65 million years ago) in search of information about dinosaurs. Hosted by Nigel Marven, "Chased by Dinosaurs" is produced in the style of other documentaries about nature on the Discovery Channel.

"Chased by Dinosaurs" was produced by the same production company that created the "Walking with Dinosaurs" and "Walking with Prehistoric Beasts" series. The computer generated imagery is lush and extremely well-done, the dinosaurs and other extinct animals appear so realistic that it is possible to forget that they are the products of special effects. The puppetry, however, could be better.

"Chased by Dinosaurs" begins with Marven traveling back in time to Mongolia in the late Cretaceous Period (140 to 65 million years ago). He is searching for Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads: The Culture and Evolution of Natural History Museums by Stephen T. Asma will intrigue anyone interested in how the modern natural history museum came to be. I hope that this book will also encourage its readers to visit a natural history museum.">Therizinosaurus, a species of dinosaur long known solely by a 10 feet long pair of arms found in the Gobi Desert. (You can see the arms of Therizinosaurus today at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.)

During his quest for Therizinosaurus, Marven encounters several other species. His tent is trampled by a hadrosaur, then he encounters a herd of Protocertops guarding their nests. Next Marven observes a pack of Velociraptors kill and feed on a Protoceratops. During the night, Marven and his cameraman are disturbed by a small group of Mononychus, and he briefly catches one to observe its primitive feathers.

After finding the arm bones of a Theriznosaurs, and some mysterious teeth that resemble those of a herbivore, Marven and his cameraman are chased through the forest by the Velociraptors, narrowly escaping. Finally, Marven spots the Theriznosaurus he has been seeking, and witnesses a battle between the Theriznosaurus and a Tarbosaurus. The wickedly long claws of Theriznosaurus enable it to successfully defend itself, and the Tarbosaurus retreats in defeat. The mystery of the herbivore-like teeth is solved when Marven observes a herd of Theriznosaurus feeding on vegetation.

After finding Theriznosaurus, Marven travels further back in time to Argenina 100 million years ago, during the early Cretaceous Period. This time, he is in pursuit of Giganotosaurus, the largest predatory dinosaur known. While observing a herd of Argentinosaurs drinking at a watering hole, Marven is surprised by a Sarcosuchus when it suddenly lunges from the water. After watching a Giganotosaurus kill and devour an Iguanodon, Marven flies an microlight plane amongst a group of Ornithocheirus (a pterosaur) while searching for more Argentinosaurs. He weighs an Argentinosaurus using a scale designed to weigh semi-trucks, and watches a young Argentinosaurus be killed by Giganotosaurus. But Marven needs to pay closer attention while he's hanging out at the water's edge again...
