From AD 1001 to the present day, there has been important and unbroken Muslim influence in the sub-continent. Those who converted to Islam so that they became about one quarter of the total population increased the number of Muslims. No body now looks at them as invaders or foreigners because now Muslims are the locals of this part of the world. Muslims have settled down here, developed families and adopted the sub-continent as their own land.
The Muslim arrival in the sub-continent had many impacts or results. One of the most effective impact was the growth of a new language called Urdu (which is today the national language of Pakistan). Urdu is a mixture of Hindi, English, Sansikrat, Arabic (which the Arabs brought with them in their many invasions) and Persian. Urdu is now a widely used language. It is a fine tongue in which in present day much out standing prose and poetry is written. As the people came to know more about Islam, which the Muslims practiced, and became interested in, it and they began to take the good points from it, without actually giving up their own religious beliefs. So if a Hindu or Sikh did not leave his own religion he was nevertheless inspired a lot by Islam and many of them died with their hearts still motivated a lot towards Islam and they learnt a lot from it too. In material things, the Muslims made their mark in their buildings and their gardens that is architecture. Muslims built forts, mosques and palaces, many of them are now world famous. Among them is the Taj-Mahal, one of the modern wonders of the world, the mughal emperor Jahangir as a Tomb built it for his beloved wife. In Delhi (India) the Red fort, Shalimar bagh in Lahore (Pakistan), Badshahi mosque in Lahore, all are beautiful pieces of architecture. The Muslim settlers became interested in the art and culture of their neighbors. They enjoyed Indian music. The famous Hindu musician Tanseen, lived at the court of Akbar. Muslims also developed a new kind of printing. But still their lies a very big difference between Hindus and Muslims but that is not because of social values but because of social reasons. One can say that in some ways both Hindus and Muslims share the same kind of life but in some ways both are keeping on their own customs. Even today a marriage between a Muslim and a Hindu is a rare case. Many Hindus are vegetarians, but many Muslims eat meet, as long as it is not the pig flesh, Muslims eat beef, which is a great sin to Hindus because for Hindus the cow is a very sacred animal.
