There are only few countries in the world in which religion plays such an important role in the lives of people as it does in Pakistan; in fact in Pakistan religion affects every citizen.
Islam was founded by prophet Muhammad, who was born in the Saudi Arabian city Mecca. Those who follow Islam are called Muslims. Muslims make up around 98 % of Pakistan's total population. The basics of Islam are very clear and simple. Islam says that there is only one God and He is the creator of all the things and no one can share Him, prophet Muhammad was sent in the world to convey the message of the God to people. Prophet Muhammad is one of the towering figures of history and for a Muslim he is the most respectable person. His teachings are crystal clear and due to him with in a very short period of time Islam spread from Spain to India. The dogma of Islam believers is that prophets have been sent from time to time to convey the God's word such as Abraham and Jesus and Prophet Muhammad a he will be followed by no one. The Quran is the holy book of Islam. The Quran teaches the very basics and philosophy of Islam. For a Muslim Quran is the first to be looked for proper guidance. The adherent of Islam has five religious duties to perform which are considered must in Islam and Muslims call these five fundamental duties as "Pillars of Islam": First the firm belief in the Oneness of Allah and Muhammad being the last prophet, five prayers, fasting during Ramadan, alms for the poor and if he/she is capable then he must perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). Most of the Muslims in Pakistan are Sunni and rest are Shias. These are the two largest sects. Ismailies, followers of Agha Khan, are also very active in Pakistan being financially sound. They are indigenous to the Northern Area of Pakistan. As mentioned, Islam plays a very active role in the lives of Pakistanis and Islam affects every portfolio of society. Women in Islam are asked to cover their bodies properly and one finds veiled women when travelling in Pakistan. Qibla (direction towards Mecca) is marked everywhere because Muslims are bound to pray five times a day. One finds mosques in every area for performing this duty.
