Meditation is an important tool in teaching the mind to focus. It also can be used to align the chakras, or become attuned to them. It introduces an individual to the initial stages of trance. Meditation can also be used to introduce a state of relaxation as well. With regular practice one also becomes more aware of and in tune with them selves. If meditation is a new experience for you, then you can start by first grounding yourself. Don't start out with the intention of meditating for hours and hours. Five minutes is a good place to start and then gradually increase the duration of time for each session. * Silent Mantra - for stress release. -- choose a single syllable word or combination of single syllables (doesn't have to mean anything specific, mine doesn't). This will be your mantra. -- Arrange yourself somewhere you're comfortable and won't be disturbed for a while. I recommend low lights and quiet but if you prefer soft music** in the background, feel free. -- Once you're seated, clear your mind and relax as best you can. Allow about two minutes before starting. Now, think your mantra in your mind. Allow it to repeat itself in your mind. Don't force it. Allow your breathing to slow. Sometimes your mantra will keep time with the beating of your heart, other times it will be erratic or set its own rhythm. *Alpha Meditation - this method is what I use when seeking communication with my spirit guides. -- Arrange yourself as in the previous meditation. I use a candle placed in a position behind me as well as new age or relaxing music set at a very low volume (this provides white noise). However, when I am in surroundings particularly absent of distracting noises, the music is unnecessary. -- Once you're prepared and your mind is calmed start by envisioning (with your eyes closed) a wall or screen that is red. When you are able to hold that in your mind, change the color to orange, then yellow, green, blue, purple, and finally indigo. Reverse the order before ending your session. *Relaxation Exercise - this muscle relaxation technique facilitates all over relaxation. Use it before using a deeper meditation method if you find you're unable to unwind. -- Settle yourself in a position where you are stretched out completely. Dim lights and turn on relaxing music at a low volume. -- Start at your feet. Contract the muscles by squeezing your toes. Hold for a second, and then release them. Do the same thing with the muscles in your shins, then your thighs, and continue working your way up your body ending with your face and head. Repeat this process several times.
