Creating Ritual: The Purpose

Ritual touches the lives of many of us. Mundanely, we engage in ritual for holidays, special occasions, meditation, and to mark the routine aspects of day-to-day living and life's milestones. When designing ritual one has to first determine what the purpose or theme of the ritual is.

In family living it is not uncommon to celebrate the milestones of attaining maturity. Birthdays can be celebrated, a daughter's first mense, a son's first shave, baby's first word or steps. These are all things we often choose to document with ritual. Parties are the form these rituals take.

Holiday celebrations often involve ritual which commemorates in some way the meaning of the holiday. Samhain celebrations often involve divination, a recognition of the turning of the season, the rebirth of the Sun God, etc.

A well-executed ritual will leave the participants with a feeling of transcendence quite often, or a feeling of having been touched on some deeper level of understanding or being. Too, rituals written for fun, will leave attendees with a lighter heart and a sparkle in their eyes. So, in designing your ritual, give a mind for the effect you want to have on those participating in the event.

So, in this first segment on creating ritual, I've discussed the first step in creating ritual. The next topic will be that of finding a suitable space.

Blessings, Myrrha

I've had more than one Pagan/Wikkan tell me that they are quite comfortable in the Catholic Mass observations. I too can appreciate great garb, what with my being a SCA'dian as well.
