So what's a coven? Before I answer that question, tell me this. What is a church?... or, what is a think tank?... or what is a quilting circle? As you define these group structures to yourself, you may be surprised to find they have functions in common with some very ordinary, every-day groups. You may even belong to one or another of them yourself.
The church has been the source of strength and cohesion for many families and a corner stone in the develpment of many communities. The primary characteristic is that a church is a building in which a the religious observations of those that belong to a particular Christian faith are shared. It can also mean those individuals that meet together in observation of the customs of a particular faith. When a group that practices magick formalizes its association they become a coven. When this group decides on a "statement of purpose," they then establish a reason for being and a foundation for the goals they set. When conflict arrises that affects the coven they then find a need to solve problems. Problem solving is a necessary part of any group's continued evolution. These problems are addressed by a few or all of its members. Well a think tank does this - problem solving is its primary purpose. Odd I should use a quilting circle as a visual here? Not really. In a quilting circle one draws closer to the members there that participate in the accomplishment of a predefined goal. While the hands are busy performing a task that is fairly routine in a setting that is familiar and comfortable, the over layer of chatter provides a venue in which to become more familiar with those working with you. The environment also allows one to let one's hair down, discuss problems, share techniques. So a coven, when seen in comparison to the three group structures above would seem to be harmless. It provides a focus for individuals seeking community in the worship of their duties, practice of magick and interaction with those diverse communities around them with which they must also interact. The bad rep covens have with those ignorant as to what one truly is, is no different than the stereotypical thinking one encounters with regard to race, ethnic origin, sexual preference, or even economic status. You'll also find there is good in any group and bad. And some groups have a focus that is good and some have a focus that is bad. Go To Page: 1 2
