one's motive in giving, try to give without letting anyone
know it was you. I'm sure you'll learn quite a bit about
yourself that way. Give to be seen is what our culture
teaches. I find a great deal of amusement when I read that
a millionaire has given thousands of dollars to some charity
and then has it splashed all over the media. A healthy ego doesn't require recognition from the masses, but rather finds
contentment in knowing and understanding the self.
Some say, "I've given him the shirt off my back and now look
what he has done to me," or, "I've given him the best years of my life and look what I get in return." If we bestow a gift or
a favor and expect a return for it, it is no gift but a trade
(Quoted from Good Reading). Giving to receive in return ranks
right up there with giving to be seen of others. In my
universe, as I explore spirituality, I find the benefits more
noteworthy, if I give with no strings attached. It's the
inner person who reaps those benefits, and they're not
received of anybody else.
So, I guess in closing this exploration, the art of true
generosity is one to be learned. In giving, I'm releasing
my hold on those things which are temporal, and in turn that
which is temporal has lesser and lesser hold on me. I'm sure
there are many ideas and opinions on this, and I'm looking
forward to the many comments you all will have.
Blessings,
