The Magick in Candle Burning

© Myrrha

Candle magick goes back to the fires burned by early man to keep caves and homes safe. They dicovered that wild animals would cower and run before it, and that it kept them warm, and provided light after the sun had set.

Folks with an affinity for fire elementals will have great success with candle magick. Elementals are beings which are guardians associated with the four corners of the earth: air, water, fire, and earth. Sylphs are associated with air, salamanders with fire, gnomes with earth, and undines with water.

The phases of the moon figure into candle magick. One would burn a candle during the waning moon to remove or reverse and one would burn a candle during the waxing moon to increase or gain. The full moon is the strongest for the waning period and the new moon is strogest for the waxing period.

Magick is also flexible by nature one can combine various magickal practices to accomplish an end. Some types of magick with which one could combine candle magick are: color, herb, aroma, and tarot magick. This would strengthen the energy expelled with the magickal work. It would serve to focus the will of the practitioner more strongly also.

As with most endeavors there would be a preparation period for the task ahead. Gather the oils, symbols, sigils, and tools you will need. Inscribe on the candles to be used any symbols or sigils. Dress the candle. A candle is dressed in any of three ways:

a. by massaging it from wick to base to draw or from base to wick to remove,
b. by massaging from center to wick and center to base, or
c. by massaging from base to wick.

The finger tips should be daubed in either virgin olive oil, scented oil, or herbed oil (according to magickal property). The massaging process then rubs it into the candle.

Candle magick is not uncommon in use by non wikkans. Many christian religions burn candles to focus their will in a matter and have it delivered to their deities in the form of prayer. New agers also burn candles for various purposes.

There are many correlations for colors and days of the week when one is selecting the appropriate time to work and the right color for the work as well as the day of the week. A good book on magick which contains a section on candle magick or a book on candle magick would provide these details. Practical Candleburning Rituals is an excellent book by Raymond Buckland.
