On Being Pagan

The Pagan population in the United States is growing by leaps and bounds. Many persons are finding the strength within to walk down the roads their spiritual needs take them. For some, this means a parting with religious views they've maintained up to the point they find themselves tugged down unfamiliar, though comfortable, roads in the search for answers in the light of a newly awakened spirituality.

In my own life, not only have I long parted with belief systems I explored when much younger, I have accepted the responsibility of priestess in the Wikkan (my spelling) belief system. Those responsibilities go beyond playing dress up for Pagan celebrations, but rather, reach deep inside of my inner self in the search for answers to questions and the continued growth and healing necessary in the life of a priestess. Introspective thought is something on which I place primary importance in any teaching I do. If one cannot look to one's self and discover those areas that need healing, growth, or strengthening, then how can one take on the greater responsibilities one is handed by the Lady and Lord in dealing with others within the Pagan community?

Paganism is about freedom. Freedom to discover the spiritual path that I must walk in this incarnation is one of my primary focuses as a Pagan. I am free to examine my current belief system or that taught to me by my parents or that acquired in the form of a set of mandates from other religious pursuits I may have had. I continue to evaluate my own relationship to the world around me and make informed decisions as to those elements of myself that need growth.

Being Pagan is also about living by the Rede. I'm sure the lines, "...an you harm none, do what you will," are familiar to many Pagans. What are the extreme boundaries of that rule? If you really think about it, our every action requires thought and consideration in order to fulfill that portion of the Rede.

Finally for me, being Pagan is about exercising my right to walk down the path I have chosen, and being willing to allow folks to walk down their paths as they are called.

Bright Blessings,
Myrrha
