All winter long as we huddle in the cold, we look forward to spring and its promise of brighter skies and warmer weather. Then it arrives, and more often or not we complain because we get bright skies somehow filled with drizzling rain and soggy ground. The damp air keeps the chill in our bones, and we begin thinking of running off to somewhere like Jamaica.
Well, don't despair. This is the time of year where you can cover topics such as baby animals, how things grow, and more. Gear up by entering the terms "virtual zoo" in your favourite search engine, and take a look at all the cute and intersting animals. If you have one nearby, go visit the real thing. Have fun imitating the animals behaviour or sounds, getting as silly as you like. Or if it is cold and nasty out, why not visit a local aquarium instead? Then go home and lay out beach blankets, have a fake beach picnic in your living room and do sea life arts and crafts.Try glueing pasta seashells on boxes and painting them to make a treasure box, or cutting up an old sponge into a star fish shape, and stamping it. Take sand and a bit of food colour, mix with the sand to colour it, then "draw" a design on paper with glue. Drizzle the sand over the paper, then allow to dry. Once dry, shake excess off gently over a waste bin. Lovely!!!! Why not get a small packet of pansy seeds and sow them in a window sill tray or pot? You can watch together as they gow, and when large enough, either transplant to the garden or hang them outside in a hanging pot.You can even go for a European hanging basket look by also adding Nasturtiums, which have the added benefit of being edible. And speaking of edible, here is a great idea to get your kids to eat their vegetables. Have the kids start out some vegetable seeds inside or under glass. Then in a few weeks, either plant out or grow in patio containers. Have them keep them watered, and if more than one child, have them see whose plants get the first tomato, etc. Its amazing, but kids are usually keen to taste what they grew themselves! While you are having fun planning your field trips, doing your related crafts, and watching your seeds grow, something special will be happening. The cool early spring will be slipping away bringing full blown mild sunshine all too soon followed by summer scorching heat. Ahhhhhh, who needs Jamaica? Go To Page: 1
