The Holly King, Unicorns, and Colouring Pages for Pagan Kids

The celebration of Yule brings forth the image of holly as sprigs are used everywhere as decoration. The triad image of father, mother, and child also prevail as we await the rebirth of the Sun King, but let us not forget the harbinger of the holly, the Holly King. Just as the Oak is the tree of the associated with the Sun King, so the holly tree, or kerm oak, is the tree of the Holly King. The two are oppositional twins one to another.

Just as the oak represents the sacrificial aspect, so the holly is the symbol of renewal, as its greenery springs eternally fresh. The virginal unicorn is associated with the holly tree, being a symbol of myth, magick, and eternity, so in addition to decorating up your home with holly, now is a great time to indulge in your unicorn fantasies.

To put the perspective of the twinned trees in perspective with their Celtic mythic origins, we look to the Druids. The Druid's place called Gwynvyd was /is a place where man communed with that which created. It was a void where all evil was abolished, and which could not be destroyed. A Rainbow River flowed into the entrance of Gwynvyd, and to enter it, one had to cross over a bridge, which was bounded on one side by an oak, and a holly on the other.

There are many places to obtain learning materials relating to Yule and other parts of the Wheel of the Year. There are free colouring pages on the Internet, newsletters, and more. One of the best I have found is a project called the pagan Colouring Book on the Stella Australis page. Not only is the Wheel of the year covered with colouring pages, but an large of array of gods and goddesses from a large variety of pantheons. They also have a puzzle pages section. You can just click on a link and print out the desired page on regular A4 sized paper, or download as a zipped or PDF file. The PDF format requires Adobe Acrobat Reader which is free, look for it at Download.com, or at the Adobe Acrobat website. Now, I am sure you are chomping at the bit to see this wonderful project yourself, so I will give you the web address. You will find the Pagan Colouring Book Project at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/2962/col...
