Summer Memories

Summer is the one time of year when children have seem to have virtually unlimited access to their friends. Summer is also the one time of year that we parents in general, homeschoolers or not, seem to slack off on our children's education. While we may use the excuse that we all deserve a break, it is not really fair as come next school term, a great deal of time can end up wasted doing material review from the previous year. Here is one idea to use for language arts that will allow your child to look back later in nostalgia, as well as express his or her creativity...and it is a lot of fun too! It simply will not seem to be "schoolwork" for either child or parent. Purchase an inexpensive camera for your child. Have them take photos of outings, and even ordinary fun summer days spent with friends. Have her and their friends draw pictures as well. Then, come evening, help your child write a journal entry for what they did that day. Treasures, such as broken friendship bracelets, pebbles or small seashells can also be mounted onto the pages. Just be sure to make certain that the paper used for the scrapbook is acid free, so that it will last for years without decaying, and be sure to caption all the pictures. Not only will they be practicing their writing skills, but they can get as creative as they wish with the drawings and photos. Older children with a bit of computer savvy might even wish to place their scrapbook on the computer, where it can be emailed to friends or printed out. The extra bonus is, in years to come, this scrapbook can be taken out and looked at. Forgotten memories will reawaken, and friends past and present can be celebrated. What a wonderful gift to give a child.
