In an earlier article, we discussed planting a garden with your child containing plants that are sacred to their favourite deity. A similiar approach can be used with food. just as certain plants and colours are associated with a deity, certain foods and meals are as well. A really fun activity is to help your child prepare a meal containing foods that are prepared with a few of your chosen deity's ingredients, whether it be an herb used for seasoning or the actual foodstuff. Discuss what you would like to make and choose the menu. The first step is to gather the food and ingredients. If you are unsure about what these should be, take a quick look in a book or website dealing with this deity. Next, go to the grocery store with list in hand. Let your child locate the items on both the list and the shelves. You can even incorporate math into this by having them add up the total as you shop. If you planted a vegetable or herb garden with sacred plants, check to see what can be harvested. Next, take the gathered ingredients, and thoroughly wash your hands and the produce. Set out your necessary preparation materials such as mixing bowls, cutting boards, etc. You are ready to begin cooking! This activity is as fun as it is delicious. You will enjoy it a lot more if you go with simpler dishes, so that your child is as hands on as possible. When it is ready to eat, serve on a table set with appropriately colored candles, and feast! Be sure to mention to everyone how your child cooked this, and what a great job he/she made. Have your child point out what is special about the foods included in the meal so he can impress everyone with his new knowledge. Above all, enjoy the food!
