Many home educators dream of not only being educationally self-sufficient, but of being and teachimg their children to be completely self-sufficient. The dream of a homestead. Homesteading itself can be a very educational opportunity. The potential opportunity not only to learn self-suffiency and reliablilty, but of nurturing one's available environmental resources and the value of hard work and good craftmanship.

For most, though, it remains a pipe dream. Homesteading can be a very intimidating idea. How does one go about acquiring suitable land? What about affordable eco-friendly housing? What about food? Fortunately, information such as this and other topics realted to homesteading are readily available. Perhaps you do not wish to go whole hog on this notion, but some of its ideas appeal to you, such as building an energy-wise self-sufficient home just outside of the city. You may even discover tips on how to make your home in the suburbs more self-sufficient and eco-friendly without having to move house. Or maybe you just wish to go organic in your garden and homeopathic in your home remedies.

Whichever path you actually end up choosing, be sure to involve your children in the process. Take the time to explore with them the concepts behind the various alternative power resources and conduct related experiments. Let your children explore the natural world by giving them an organic garden spot of their own, even if its in a container. Take up pottery or woodworking and learn the skills of craftmanship together. Even a city child can experience these joys. Not only will Mother Earth thank you, but so will your children.
