Shades of Grey: Part Four of the Energy and Perception Seriesyou have to make mistakes in order to truly have the human experience. When you straddle the fence on issues that are Shades of Grey, you find yourself stuck in the same spot. When you move one way or the other you find yourself either moving toward what is socially acceptable or away from what is socially acceptable. There is no real right or wrong. Either one is going to cause harm to someone. Either one is going to bring down a painful reality to all that are involved. According to the Tradition known as Chaos Magick, the goal of such a working isn't to avoid it by just doing what is socially acceptable. The goal is to judge what level of responsibility you are willing to own for your actions or lack there of. Are you more comfortable not taking the risk? Can you take the risk and deal with the results even if they end up having a backlash effect you don't want? It is those questions all pagans at some point in time or another will find themselves facing. It is in that horrible place where they will have to do what they believe is best one way or the other. Either is a leap of faith. The first being a leap that your karma is enough to take care of you without you having to act and the other is a leap of faith that you can emotionally and spiritually handle what your actions bring into existence. Ultimately, the test lies in how well we handle the responsibility of our actions. Even in choosing not to act, we end up acting. This action, though opposite of what we might wish we could do or would like to do, has its consequences as much as going through with the magical endeavor. It is our ability to take responsibility for our own actions either way, that teaches the lesson. It is our hearts that weigh the evidence and decide the path to take. All we can do as humans is follow our hearts, and take responsibility for what comes from doing just that, regardless of the path our hearts lead us to. As Garth Brooks so eloquently put it. "Life is not tried it is merely survived if your standing outside the fire." What fire are you skimming the edges of? Are you avoiding making a decision because you don't
