Most people know it as Ground Hog Day. But, February Second (or the first depending upon your tradition) was more than just a day that a rodent popped its head out of a hole and decided if we were going to have more winter or not. I personally always thought it was so silly. I mean if he sees his shadow the sun must be shining and if the sun were shining wouldn't that mean that summer was coming?
It was a nice change when I became a Pagan to find that I could do something special on this day besides worry about what old Phil was going to do. Traditionally this is the day to celebrate the return of life to the earth. Spring will be coming soon as shown by the lengthening of the days. It's also known as Candlemas, Oimelc, and Lady Day. Oimelc represents the beginning of Lambing season. That is why it is traditional to pour a glass of milk upon the ground to help with the return of fertility to the earth. This year Imbolic falls on a Sunday. So we will celebrate as a family most likely Sunday evening and all day Monday. I'm going to get some different sized white, Gold and Red candles to place on top of my bookshelf. The kids and I are going to start planting seeds for the Garden we are going to try to have in the spring, We will clean house and then run around like monkeys with spray bottles full of sea salt water spraying the house and Welcoming the sun. We may make candleholders or even dip some candles. This is the perfect holiday for making your own candles. Basically it's going to be a day of fun, games and housework. But, I doubt I hear a single complaint out of any of them after they find out that we are going to make a pagan apple cake and bake cookies. I'm going to try to find a cookie cutter in the shape of the sun. It is my intent as well to surf through those pagan music sites I gave you and find some wonderful songs for the day as well to teach to the children. We may even go outside and see if any of my daffodils or Tulips are budding yet. Or if the rose bush looks like it's going to put out new leaves anytime soon. Hey this is the south, things come to life a little sooner here than in other places. And while we are out looking to see if anything is about ready to bud and bloom we will pour a cup of milk on the ground in Honor of the Celtic Goddess Brigit or Bride who in the Greek is known as Hecate. (No surprise I love this holiday huh) Go To Page: 1 2
