The Spiral Dance A rhythm to the soul That sends you higher Dancing out of control

It sparks a light In the depths of our hearts And sends us flying Through eternities Dark

Alone I dance this rhythm Gradually building the tempo The dance itself becomes the beat of the drum Bringing us always to the heart that is Hers.

The Spiral Dance has been a long-standing tradition among many Wiccan's and even a few non Wiccan Pagans. There are many creation stories that include the idea of the Goddess upon awaking and seeing the darkness of the nothingness around her beginning to dance in a spiral rhythm much like the circular fashion in which the universe swirls and moves within itself. Everywhere her foot landed a spark of light would flash and a part of the universe would be created.

This idea is the bases by which at fertility rituals held around the world one will find some form of the spiral dance. Today it is commonly seen at Shabbat Celebrations like Beltane. The building of energy through a constant rhythm of swirling bodies and souls happily dancing in honor of the dance of life that was first preformed so long ago.

But, it is more than that it is danced as a way of saying thank you to the Great Mother for dancing us into existence. Through dancing in a spiral rhythmic fashion we recreate some of the energy she bestowed upon us. By doing so we create a cone of power that can be lifted to the heavens and used to help re-energize the earth or create a better acceptance and understanding of our own path. It is a beautiful means by which we can worship the Goddess.

The Spiral rhythm also reminds us that there is more to paganism than just witchcraft or magick. That it is about worship of the divine as we see it. It brings into evidence the purity of nature, the importance of the balance between male and female energies in the divine force. It reminds us that all things spiral together always moving forward always reaching for some new knowledge or understanding.

Ultimately the path of Paganism is about understanding the divine essence that lives in all things and learning how to live in harmony with everyone and everything regardless of our differences. In fact the entire goal of the Great Mother at least from my view is not to separate us from others but to help everyone stop looking at what makes us different and start looking at what makes us the same. When we learn to live within the ever spiraling energy that is the divine Mother we learn that nothing ever stays the same and that all people and all creatures are just as important and divine as we are. For we were all created from this spiral dance. If for no other reason we are the same in that fashion. And in that fashion we owe it to the divine Mother to dance her dance in both remembrance and as a pledge to always remember that we are all one in her dance and one in her presence. We are her children connected by her eternal web of light. We are the children of the Old Ways dancing some days just to feel the heart beat of the Goddess, much as a child will snuggle up to her mother to feel the mothers heart beat and know that all in the world is safe again.
