Plant surface beauties


Perhaps the extrafloral nectar secretion is for plant defense. It attracts ants and the ants prey upon the attackers of the plant. Ants gain sugar as a source for energy from the nectar. Certain plants have nectar rich in amino acids and ants do find it attractive.

Roots,twigs, stems, tubers an even fruits of several plants have lenticels. Generally a lenticel forms on a stem where a stomate once occurred. Lenticels are blister like and are breaks in the surface of a plant. They help in gaseous exchange between the atmosphere and the internal tissues of the plant.
