All in all the skin of sponges – secretes its skeleton, contracts pore size to control entry of water, creates water current, helps in catching and digesting food particles, carries out respiration, excretion and regeneration, reproduction. They lack specialized nervous cells and show no well-coordinated responses to changes in the environment. When the water is not to their liking they contract pore size of the ostia to allow less water in. Something similar to our holding the breath when there is a stink and we can not go away.
