Skin-The Wonderwrap-9

A youthful skin is smooth and free of defects like breaks, cracks and blotches. Shows a reddish tint and is somewhat suntanned. Such a skin has a profuse blood circulation, firm and elastic tone, some traces of “baby fat”, and is covered with little or no cosmetics.

Such a skin has a rapid rate of turnover of cells and can effectively rebuild collagen and elastin the fibers found in dermis of skin. It also has adequate microcirculation and flow of enough nutrients to the skin so that age related ‘graying” of skin can be minimized.

A vast ocean of literature awaits you if you wish to go into details of skin care. (Try searching skin care on any popular search engine and you will find several thousand sites waiting for you to click.) For most readers following tips gleaned from a voluminous data may be of practical value.

Eat 3 servings or more of salads / fresh fruits / steamed vegetables every day. This will ensure enough supply of vitamins and minerals to the skin.

Cut down on deep fried, salted, sweetened (sugar loaded) food. Drink plenty of water. Have milk, fruit juices, buttermilk, soups, and salads.

Sleep enough number of hours. How much is enough varies considerably from person to person. Skin revives itself when we sleep. (It is well established that growth hormone secretion is at its peak in growing children about two hours after they fall asleep.)

Cut out alcoholic drinks and tobacco completely.

Take aerobic exercises, four times a week and occasionally take deep breaths. Any exercise like brisk walking, swimming, skipping rope, etc. which lasts for 25 minutes or more can be considered aerobic.

Take bath regularly with cold / lukewarm water to cleanse skin. Wash face with water 2-3 times a day.

Massage face - with chin upward strokes. Either about 5 minutes daily or 20 minutes a week.

Avoid hot baths, as also sun in its harshness, and strong dry blasts of air / wind.

As we get older the sweat and oil producing glands in our skin decrease in numbers, size and vigor. Wrinkles develop as collagen, giving elasticity becomes weaker. Blood vessels in skin reduce and slow down the circulation.

Soaps are often alkaline (pH 9.5-11), and remove the natural acid protection as well as extract protective lipids (fats) from the skin. Washing with alkaline soap can increase this alkaline state and make the skin even more vulnerable to irritation and infection.

Some cosmetic products are advertised to contain collagen and elastin, the two proteins in skin. Incorporation of these substances into cosmetics does not mean they would be absorbed in our skin and become integral part of our skin. Often the collagen and elastin is obtained from cattle or bird sources. Neither collagen nor elastin in the cosmetics can penetrate through skin. Sometimes fragments of these molecules are used, but even these fragments cannot penetrate the skin. Such products are not just useless they can be positively harmful as they may expose you to the dangers of "prions", the carriers of "mad-cow" disease, a condition, which causes progressive brain degeneration.
