Orthodox Christianity - what is it?


propagated atheism. This was harshest in Albania, which in 1967 declared itself the world's first atheist state, and closed all churches and mosques, with no exceptions.

Orthodox Christianity has spread from its historical heartland in the Eastern Mediterranean in the last 200 years. The spread was through missionaries, emigrants and refugees from oppression settling in other places. In parts of Africa there were spontaneous movements to Orthodoxy by indigenous people, so that the stronghold of Orthodoxy in Africa is no longer Alexandria, but in the countries around Lake Victoria, especially Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. At the beginning of the 1990s the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe made it easier for Orthodox Christians to worship and rebuild their churches, but in the Near East Christians are an endangered species, and under a greater threat than ever before.
