The Land of the Thunder Dragon: Bhutan

For those less interested in serious historical research, but would like, never the less, to get accurate and entertaining information, as well as beautiful images, a visit to the website of the PBS show, Bhutan: The Last Shangri-La, is an absolute must. Begin with the section, Bhutan: A Rich History, for a very readable history of this magnificent land. For a little natural history, visit the pages on the wildlife of Bhutan. Of course you have heard of yaks, red pandas and snow leopards, but what about the serow, drongo and golden langurs? Lastly, do not miss the first hand account of what it was like to make the film. Near the end is an incredibly moving story of a courageous mahout named Saurang Boro who saved the filmmakers from certain death on the horns of a wild Asiatic buffalo.

Bhutan has many stories, many faces, a rich history and the temptation of mystery. Visiting is difficult but worthwhile according to the accounts of those who have traveled the fabled land. I hope you have enjoyed your brief virtual trip and are ready to learn more through the links on this page.
