Researching Asian History

Perhaps your history professor has just handed out the requirements for your term paper, or perhaps your high school teacher has assigned you a history project, or perhaps you are just interested in learning more about some aspect of Asian history. Whatever the reason, you are going to have to do some research on the internet. Many college classes now require internet resources in bibliographies as well as the standard sources. Depending on the resources of your local library, often you will find information on the internet that you can't find elsewhere. At the end of this article, I will also show you how to cite an internet resource in a bibliography.

The problem is now how to find quality resources. Anyone can put up a website and claim credit as an expert. I don't make that claim, but I will attempt to point you in the direction of those quality sites. Starting your research with the major search engines, such as Google and AltaVista, and the engines which search the search engines, such as Metacrawler, can bring you varying results, from right on target to pages and pages of irrelevant results. Generally built by human beings, directories are often a good place to start as the sites in them have been reviewed by a real person. There are several to choose from, such as dmoz, Hotrate, and Studyweb. There are also many quality websites, built by people with expertise and a passion for their subject. Now let's find out how to find them!

If you are looking for general websites that cover all of Asian history, you are not going to find many, though there are a few.

History of Asia in General
Quality information from the World History Archives, covering regions and topical issues, including political, economic, labor, social and cultural.

If you are still looking for ideas for a history paper or just want to dabble in Asian History, try something fun and a little different.

This Day in Asian History

Several sites cover very broad regions of Asia and are good places for an overview.

South Asian Search Engine
Extremely targeted and comprehensive search engine and directory for South Asia.

Are you looking for biographies of important people? One method is to type the name into the search engines and directories and hope you find relevant results. The more famous the person, the more likely you will find what you need, especially if they are famous enough to have a category in a directory.
