Malacca and IslamAs with most of Asia however, such wealth, industry and culture did not go ignored by Western powers. In 1511 the Portugese fell sway to temptation and, under the leadership of Admiral Alsonso d' Albuquerque, conquered the city of Malacca and for the next 130 years ruled it with a firm hand until the Dutch grabbed it in 1641. Islam kept a firm hold in the hearts of the people and remains the principle religion of Malaysia to this day.
