Topic Suggestions and Sample Questions for Japanese History

**Title of a paper with which I earned an A: The Roots of Education in Japan: A Comparison Between the Meiji Restoration and the American Occupation." There is a lot of irony in the comparison.

**What motivated the dramatic changes during the Meiji Era (1868-1912)? Was there any area in which the changes were more significant than in others? Who decided on policy?

**Did the policies of Japan and the United States toward China in the 1930s conflict greatly enough to cause the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Would it be accurate to say that the conflicts were the ultimate cause of WWII in the Pacific?

**Commodore Perry arrived in Japan in 1853 near the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1863). Despite a rigid policy of isolation and resistance to change, internal changes in Japan did occur which made it less difficult for the Japanese to deal with foreigners. What were the changes and how did they affect relations with foreigners?

Good luck with the papers and exams. You will survive! And just a quick piece of advice on all the websites which offer free term papers: DON'T USE THEM! Not only is it just plain wrong to plagiarize, and not only can you be expelled from school, web savvy teachers can search those sites for student papers. Don't take the risk.

What do you think about "homework help" sites like http://www.academon.com/ ? Students can sell and buy research papers there.
Is is a learning tool? A reference? Or simple cheating? ...
